ABOUT
LITERACY KICKS

Established by Gareth Walker, a journalist with over 20 years of experience covering sport for national newspapers, Literacy Kicks enhances the literacy skills of children at all levels by taking them inside the exciting world of sports reporting.

Gareth Walker has been writing on sport since 1996. After graduating from the University of Central Lancashire with a journalism degree in 2001, he moved full-time into the industry, and in 2002 was appointed rugby league correspondent for the Sunday People.

That began a near two decade association with the parent company now known as Reach plc, which saw him cover World Cups and Tri-Nations tournaments in Australia and New Zealand and become rugby league correspondent for the Daily Mirror.

A past editor of Rugby League World magazine, Walker has also worked in a host of other sports including football and cricket, has filed stories for every national newspaper, and was a member of the International Paralympic Committee’s media team for London 2012, a role that he repeated in Paris during the summer of 2024. He is also the programme editor for rugby league’s major events including the Grand Final, Magic Weekend and Challenge Cup final.
